Tracing your roots in North Lanarkshire

North Lanarkshire have some great facilities for searching for family histories, read on to find out more.

 

In the north of the area, the Lenziemill Archive Centre in Cumbernauld keeps extensive records of the former councils which now make up North Lanarkshire, as well as local records and photographs on families, businesses and estates from the area.  A map copying service is available to help with planning researches and applications and photographic reproductions of images from the archives can be ordered.  For current costs, contact the centre.

The centre is also linked to the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) and use of the link can be made by prior appointment with the centre.

In the central area, the Local Studies Room within Airdrie Library provides full facilities for family history research, as well as holding a considerable archive of information on the towns of Airdrie and Coatbridge.  The archive also holds the Monklands photographic collection, census information and local newspapers dating back to 1847.

Staff can assist with family history searches.  Initial enquiries are free, then current charges apply.  Contact staff for full details. Booking is recommended for microfilm and microfiche readers.

In the southern part of the area, Motherwell Heritage Centre provides the main facility for family history researchers.  This purpose-built heritage centre was opened in 1996 and has a fully-equipped local studies facility on the first floor (lift available). 

As well as an extensive reference library, there is also a full digital archive of local photographs and newspapers.  Census and other information is also held on both microfilm and digital formats.
