Search the 1881 Census

Try out our 1881 census search, provided by ScotlandsPeople, the official government source of genealogical data for Scotland. The search gives you a sneak preview of some of the search functionality available on the Scotlandspeople website allowing you limited access to the official 1881 census records.

So, if you have information about any of your ancestors who were living in Scotland in 1881, you should be able to make as start of your search.

The search allows you to use any or all of the search fields. If at first you don't have any luck, try using fewer search fields, and remember that mispellings were common in the records of those times so you may need to try a few different spelling of the first names and surnames you have recorded.

If you don't think your ancestors were living in Scotland in 1881, visit the Scotlandspeople.gov.uk pay-per-view website, where you can search census records from 1851 - 1901, as well as the official Scottish records for births, deaths, marriages and much more.

Visit our helpful Regions and Counties section to find our more about undertaking family history research within each of the ancient counties.
